A. The Mexican
B. Oh Really?
Given that Babe Ruth’s ‘The Mexican’ is one of the foundational records of hip-hop culture, it’s not that surprising to see old pals and mash-up maestros Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop recording their own version in tribute. It’s a punchy, floor-rocking affair, with tough programmed drums replacing the original’s killer drum-breaks. The re-recorded vocals and fulsome and intense, the funk-rock guitar riffs raw and fuzzy, and the organ parts wild and energetic. Over on the flip, mic man Mr Complex stars on ‘Oh Really?’, a party-starting fusion of hip-hop, funk and synth-boogie that sounds like another bona fide floor-filler. If you need any more persuading to part with your cash – not that you should of course – this violet-coloured vinyl edition has been pressed in very limited quantities.
